Hazardous Materials Training Project, July 2005

In July, during the annual Austin/Saltillo Sister Cities visit, Austin firefighters shared a one day hazmat refresher class with the firefighters and emergency responders of Saltillo.

Austin firefighters Brock Stewart and Vince Serrano, along with retired lieutenant Billy Webb, presented the class to firefighters and first responders from more than a dozen local factories and agencies.

The class consisted of a review of the materials classification system and the use of the Hazardous Materials Guide for First Responders.

The presentation was broken up with activities, including identifying materials by UN number and by the color of placards.

One of the activities was using the table of evacuation distances and a map of the city to identify zones of protection after a spill on the highway, in this case, of liquid sulfur.   Liquid sulfur tanker

After the class, the Saltillo firefighters treated their Austin brothers to a barbeque at Saltillo Central Station.
